Code Geass S1 :Lelouch of the Rebellion

Code Geass or also known as Code Gayass
I have just finish watching this series recently and all I can say is that it is undeniably the most awesome anime to be made in 2007. It has some of the best character design, mecha design and plot that I have ever seen for a mecha anime in the past.
SPOILERS INCLUDED BELOW
The awesome character design is mainly attributed to CLAMP (who brought us Cardcaptor) who did a marvelous job with the character concepts, the characters are pleasant to look at and have a unique feel to them as compared to other animes, making it quite refreshing to watch. The main character Lelouch Lamperouge (real name Lelouch Vi Britannia or as many would call him Lulu) was a refreshing change from the standard “good” heroic protagonists found in other anime series. Lulu’s goal of destroying the Holy Empire of Britannia (whom he is a prince of) at any costs makes him something along the line of an anti-hero. However we are constantly reminded that he is indeed a good person as what is carrying out is for the good his sister Nunnally(who was blinded due to psychological trauma and crippled due to gunshot wounds sustained during the assassination of their mother) as he wanted to create a world that they can leave in peace in a world without any hatred and conflict around them. In episode 1, Lulu was involved in a series of events and was granted the power of a Geass which allows him to give absolute commands from a green haired girl call C.C (real name not revealed yet but expect it in season 2) which helps him with his plan of destroying the Britannia empire (a plan already in mind before even gaining the power). We were awed by Lulu’s intelligence when he utterly destroyed his brother (Prince Clovis) army with just a bunch of insurgents with stolen Knightmare frames and suprerior tactics and grasp of the battlefield. Lulu’s persona as Zero, leader of the Order of the Black Knights, is entertaining to watch as he struggles to keep his identity a secret and yet carry out his plans without hurting those he know. Lulu in my opinion is said to be comparable to Artemis Fowl in terms of intelligence and behavior and this makes him one of my most favorite male protagonist found in any anime series. Also another interesting character would be C.C the mysterious green haired girl whos erratic behaviour makes the show much more interesting as her true motives are yet to be found throughtout the entire first season, I also do not know what wish or contract that she had bound with Lulu when she gave Lulu his power but this makes the audience want to know more about her and thus her popularity.

Lulu and C.C
The next wonderful part about Code Geass is the plot, it has a hero(Suzaku Kururugi who had committed patricide and the only character which i despise in the series) screwing up the anti-hero’s plans which makes the series fairly interesting, also the parts where Lulu outsmarted his opponents as a battlefield commander is fun to watch. One of the most memorable lines Lulu said throughout the series is along the lines of plotting a coup d’état and a school festival at the same time. The mecha design of the series is quite interesting as most frames seemed to be built around a rocket escape pod and look different compared to mechas from other series. One of the most interesting features that set the frames apart from other mecha is that most of the suits are equipped with Slash Harken(wired rocket anchors) which can be used both offensively as a weapon or as a rope to give the frames much more mobility on terrains and opens up different styles of fighting as compared to just melee/ranged combat between the combatants. Unique mecha designs (yes the Guren Nishiki piloted by Kallen, Zero’s faithful lieutenant is fairly nice) sets this series far apart from other series like Gundam which seems to keep reusing the same concepts over and over again.
Finally, ending the first season with a cliffhanger left me wanting more of Code Geass. Thus to conclude this review, I will repeat this again, CODE GEASS IS THE BEST ANIME MADE IN 2007 and you gotta be crazy to miss it.
ALL HAIL BRITANNIA!!!!!
